Marriage & Wedding
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq. Bismillahilladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Aleem.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for reciting before or during the wedding ceremony, especially as the bride and groom are presented or engage in key rituals. It's also beneficial to recite it and then blow gently onto the couple, or onto the food and drinks being served at the wedding. Make it a habit to say this when you feel apprehension about potential negative energies or ill wishes directed towards the newlyweds.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction in Allah's protection. It's recommended to place your hand on your chest or the person you are seeking protection for, and then recite it three times. You can also blow gently onto yourself, the couple, or items like food or water after recitation. Focus on the meaning of the words – seeking Allah's perfect protection against all forms of harm.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua provides comprehensive protection from the evil eye and envy, which can unfortunately affect even the happiest occasions like weddings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of invoking Allah's divine shield against all creation's evils. It's a profound reminder that ultimately, no harm can reach us except by Allah's decree, and seeking His refuge is the most potent safeguard. The second part, 'Bismillahilladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un...', is specifically recommended by the Prophet ﷺ for protection against all kinds of harm, making it exceptionally suitable for the vulnerability of a wedding event.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "No ailment is transmitted by contagion, but the evil eye is real, and the evil omen is real, and the owl is real, and the month of Safar is real, and the sorcerer's spell is real. So whoever seeks refuge with Allah, then He is sufficient for him." Then he (ﷺ) used to seek refuge with these words: 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.' (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created). It was narrated from 'Uthman bin 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever says 'Bismillahilladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Aleem' (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing can harm on earth or in heaven, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times, will not be afflicted with any sudden calamity until the morning comes. And whoever says it in the morning three times, will not be afflicted with any sudden calamity until the evening comes."
