O Allah, I ask You for its [my wife's] goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for her, and I seek refuge in You from its [my wife's] evil and the evil of what You have decreed for her. O Allah, I ask You to inspire in me guidance and grant me protection from the evil of my own self.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma jabaltaha 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayhi. Allahumma inni as'aluka an tulhimani rushdi, wa a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended to be recited when getting married, before consummating the marriage. It's a foundational supplication for setting the right tone and seeking Allah's blessing upon the union, which can help prevent future discord stemming from misunderstandings or personality differences.

How to Read

It is best to recite this dua sincerely with a clear intention, placing your hand on the forehead of your spouse (if female, as per the hadith context) while saying it. Focus on seeking Allah's protection and guidance for both yourselves and your marital relationship. Ensure you understand the meaning and internalize the plea for Allah's help.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is powerful because it seeks Allah's blessings for the spouse and the marriage itself, asking for protection against potential evils. By seeking guidance and refuge from the evil of one's own self, it addresses the root of many interpersonal conflicts. This proactive supplication can foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding, laying a strong foundation for a harmonious married life by seeking Allah's intervention before issues arise.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that when the Prophet (ﷺ) taught a man to marry, he said: 'Take him by the forelock and make him perform two Rak'ahs of prayer, and say: Allahumma inni as'aluka min khairiha wa khairi ma jabalta 'alayha wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabalta 'alayha. (O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for it, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for it). Then, all his needs, whether they were of this world or the Hereafter, would be fulfilled.'
