اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ وَحُبَّ عَمَلٍ يُقَرِّبُنِي إِلَى حُبِّكَ
O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.
Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka wa hubba man yuhibbuka wa hubba 'amal yuqarribuni ila hubbika
When to Read
This dua is particularly relevant as you build your life with your spouse. Recite it during the early stages of marriage to foster genuine affection and a sense of belonging with your in-laws. It's also beneficial to continue reciting it periodically to strengthen these bonds. Make it a part of your regular supplications, especially after obligatory prayers, or during times of reflection and intention setting for your marriage.
How to Read
Raise your hands in supplication as you normally would for dua. Recite this prayer with sincerity and a focused heart, visualizing the positive relationships you wish to cultivate. Understand that this dua is asking Allah for the ability to love, which is a beautiful attribute. Be open to building these relationships, making an effort to connect, and treating your spouse's family with kindness and respect. Allah grants the means to achieve what is asked.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is central to cultivating loving relationships. By asking for Allah's love, and the love of those who love Him, we are aligning our hearts with divine approval. When we love those who love Allah, we are naturally inclined to love the righteous people in our lives, including our spouse's family if they are indeed striving to please Allah. The third part, seeking the love of deeds that bring us closer to Allah, encourages us to perform actions that are pleasing to Him, which can include maintaining family ties (Silat al-Rahim) and being a good spouse and in-law. This dua doesn't just magically create love, but it opens our hearts to the possibility and guides our actions towards building strong, Allah-conscious relationships within the extended family, turning in-laws into cherished family.
Source & Authentication
Yahya related to me from Malik, from Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm, from Abu Salama ibn Abdur Rahman, from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Make a lot of remembrance of Allah, the Mighty, the Majestic. Verily, Allah will declare you innocent of Shaitan for the sake of remembering Him." Yahya said, “Malik said, ‘I think that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “And seek His love, and seek the love of His actions which bring you closer to Him.”'” [Note: The primary source reference for the specific wording provided in the JSON is Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3235, where the hadith is authenticated as Hasan. The hadith in Muwatta Malik has a slightly different chain and wording but conveys a similar essence regarding seeking Allah's love and the love of deeds that draw one closer to Him. The Tirmidhi version is more direct for the purpose of this dua.]
