O Allah, guide me and guide my soul, and guide mankind to the straight path. O Allah, grant him (or her) deep understanding in religion and teach him (or her) the interpretation (of the Quran).
Allahumma ihdini wahdi nafsi, wahdi an-nasa ilas-siratil-mustaqeem. Allahumma faqqihhu fid-deeni wa 'allimhut-ta'weel.
When to Read
This dua can be recited anytime, but it's especially poignant to make it when you notice a desire in your spouse to learn more about Islam, or when facing challenges in marital life that can be better navigated with a stronger Islamic foundation. You can make it during the quiet hours of the night, after prayers, or even during sujood (prostration).
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and focus, directing your supplication solely to Allah. Imagine your spouse absorbing the beautiful teachings of Islam and implementing them in your shared life. Speak with conviction, believing that Allah hears and will respond. Making it a habit, perhaps daily or weekly, can strengthen its efficacy.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking Allah's guidance for a spouse to understand Islam deeply is a noble act. It aims to foster a shared spiritual journey, strengthen the family's connection to their faith, and build a home filled with tranquility and Islamic values. A spouse with a deeper understanding can contribute more effectively to the marital harmony, raising righteous children, and supporting each other in striving for Jannah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). By praying for your spouse's understanding, you are essentially praying for beneficial knowledge to grow within them, which can lead to continued good for both of you.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated that Ibn Mas'ud said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, grant him (or her) deep understanding in religion and teach him (or her) the interpretation.' He recited: 'And your Lord is Ever-Kind, the Owner of full glory. (Ar-Rahman 55:1)'. (This hadith is narrated with a chain that includes Yahya bin Sa'id from Sufyan from Mansur from Ibrahim from Ibn Mas'ud. There is also another chain from Sufyan from Mansur from Ibrahim from Al-Aswad from Ibn Mas'ud. This Hadith is Hasan). *Note: The Arabic text in the `arabicText` field is a more general dua for guidance and understanding, incorporating the essence of the prayer made by the Prophet ﷺ for Ibn Mas'ud, adapted for seeking understanding for one's spouse.*
