اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالتُّقَىٰ وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَىٰ
O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment (freedom from need/richness of heart).
Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina
When to Read
This beautiful and comprehensive dua can be recited anytime, but it's particularly poignant when you feel a need to pray for your spouse's spiritual well-being. Consider making it part of your daily supplications, especially after salah, or during times when you observe your spouse (or yourself) struggling with worldly attachments. It’s a prayer for inner richness that transcends material wealth.
How to Read
This is a profound supplication that should be made with sincerity and full attention. Raise your hands in the traditional manner of dua, facing the Qiblah if possible. Recite it with a humble heart, focusing on the meaning of each word. Visualize your spouse embodying guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment. Believe that Allah hears your dua and has the power to grant it. It is also beneficial to reflect on the meaning and make a personal commitment to embodying these qualities yourself.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encapsulates a complete set of spiritual and ethical virtues. Asking for Al-Huda (guidance) ensures we stay on the right path. At-Tuqa (piety) means cultivating consciousness of Allah in all our actions. Al-'Afaf (chastity/abstinence) protects us from sins and inappropriate desires, both physical and materialistic. And Al-Ghina (contentment/inner richness) is the ultimate freedom from the grip of greed and excessive love for worldly possessions. By asking this for your spouse, you are praying for their spiritual health, which in turn strengthens the foundation of your marriage, moving away from the corrosive effects of materialism and towards a life pleasing to Allah.
