Seeking Guidance in Difficult Relationships During Tahajjud

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud 1479

O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being, take me into Your care among those whom You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For You decree, and none can decree against You. And none, whom You have taken as an ally, can be humbled. Blessed are You, our Lord, and exalted.

Allahumma ihdini feeman hadayt, wa 'afini feeman 'aafayt, wa tawallani feeman tawallayt, wa barik li feema a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alayt.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, often recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his night prayers, is particularly powerful when facing complex or strained relationships. Recite it during the blessed hours of Tahajjud, when the veil between the servant and their Lord is thinnest. It's an opportune time to seek Allah's wisdom and intercession when you feel lost, misunderstood, or hurt in your dealings with others – be it family, friends, or colleagues.

How to Read

Approach this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Begin by praising Allah and seeking His mercy. Then, specifically ask Allah to guide you in the situation, grant you patience, and help you make the right decisions. Visualize the difficult relationship as you make the supplication, asking Allah to mend what is broken or guide you to the best course of action. It is also beneficial to follow this with personal, heartfelt pleas for clarity and peace in the specific relationship. Remember that Tahajjud is a time for deep personal connection with Allah, so pour out your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a cornerstone of seeking Allah's assistance in all matters, including navigating interpersonal challenges. By asking for guidance ('ihdini feeman hadayt'), you are invoking Allah's wisdom to show you the right path in handling the relationship. Asking for well-being (''afini feeman 'aafayt') seeks protection from the emotional and spiritual toll difficult relationships can take. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite this dua during his Tahajjud prayer, indicating its immense virtue and efficacy in seeking Allah's divine intervention and blessing in all aspects of life, especially when facing trials.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told me that the most desirable supplication to Allah was the supplication of Dawud (David) (peace be upon him). Dawud (peace be upon him) used to supplicate extensively. He would say: O Allah, I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the deeds that will make me earn Your love. O Allah, make the love of You more beloved to me than myself, my family, and the cold water. And when `Abdullah bin `Amr wanted to lead the prayer, he would say it after the prescribed prayers. Or when he was asked about the best supplication to say during the night prayer, he would mention this supplication of Dawud (peace be upon him). It is also narrated from `Umar bin Al-Khattab: That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate in his night prayer with these words: O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided... (and he mentioned the full dua).
