Seeking Forgiveness for Past Mistakes During Tahajjud

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 776

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant during Tahajjud, the night vigil. The stillness of the night offers a unique spiritual environment, ideal for reflecting on our past actions and seeking Allah's forgiveness with sincerity. It can be recited after the prayer itself, or during the moments of prostration when you are closest to your Lord.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full concentration and a sincere heart, ideally after finishing your Tahajjud prayer or during your prostration. Imagine yourself presenting your requests to Allah, the Most Merciful, acknowledging your shortcomings and seeking His boundless grace. Humility and earnestness are key.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses three crucial aspects of a believer's life: beneficial knowledge that guides us, pure provision that sustains us lawfully, and accepted deeds that bring us closer to Allah. Seeking forgiveness for past mistakes is an integral part of accepting Allah's grace. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua, highlighting the importance of asking for things that truly benefit us in this life and the next. The very act of turning to Allah in the late hours of the night for reflection and seeking forgiveness is itself a highly virtuous practice, drawing one closer to divine mercy.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) concluded his morning prayer, he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.' (This is the wording reported by Ibn Majah). In Sahih Muslim, the narration from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) states that she heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) reciting this supplication after the Taslim of the Fajr prayer: 'O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, provision that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.' (Sahih Muslim 776). While this hadith specifically mentions after Fajr, the essence of seeking these three things with sincerity is applicable to all times, especially during the blessed hours of the night like Tahajjud when one is actively seeking Allah's closeness and forgiveness.
