O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, purify me from my sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. O Allah, wash me of my sins with water, snow, and hail.
When to Read
This profound supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a beautiful opening (Istiftah) dua for any prayer. While it's recited after the opening Takbir (Takbiratul Ihram) in obligatory prayers, its deep plea for spiritual cleansing makes it especially fitting for the Tahajjud prayer. During the quiet hours of the night, when you stand before Allah in voluntary worship, asking for such comprehensive purification can elevate your spiritual state.
How to Read
After you utter the opening Takbir ('Allahu Akbar') to begin your Tahajjud prayer, recite this dua silently before you begin with Surah Al-Fatiha. Take a moment to reflect on each phrase. You are asking Allah, with humility and sincerity, to cleanse you from every trace of sin, just as a spotless white garment is washed clean. Let the imagery of water, snow, and hail symbolize a thorough and complete purification of your heart and soul.
Virtues & Benefits
Tahajjud is a blessed time when duas are readily accepted, and this particular supplication carries immense weight. By reciting it, you are following the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, seeking a comprehensive purification directly from Allah. This dua isn't just about forgiveness; it's about a complete spiritual renewal, asking Allah to wash away your misdeeds and distance you from future ones. It helps you start your worship with a pure heart, ready to connect with your Lord, and it embodies the deep spiritual cleansing often sought during the blessed hours of Tahajjud.

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Prophet (ﷺ) stood for prayer, he would observe silence between the Takbir (opening Allahu Akbar) and the recitation. So I asked him: 'What do you say during this silence, O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you?' He replied: 'I say: (and then he recited this dua).'
