Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 742

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent during Tahajjud (the night prayer). As you stand in the quiet stillness of the night, with your heart focused solely on Allah, asking for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and accepted deeds can open doors to spiritual insights and divine revelations. It's a moment when our supplications are believed to ascend more readily.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each word. Raising your hands in supplication during Tahajjud is a sunnah, and this is an excellent dua to make during the prostration (sujood) or after finishing the prayer, before giving salam. It's best to repeat it a few times, seeking Allah's grace for breakthroughs in your understanding and acceptance of your worship.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking beneficial knowledge allows us to understand Allah's deen better and to act upon it correctly. Pure provisions ensure that what we consume is lawful and blessed, strengthening our worship. Asking for accepted deeds is the ultimate goal – for Allah to accept our efforts, which is a sign of His pleasure and can lead to significant spiritual growth and closeness to Him. This combination can unlock profound spiritual states and understanding during the blessed hours of Tahajjud.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say when he began the prayer: 'Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdik, wa tabarakasmuk, wa ta'ala jadduk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed be Your Name, and exalted be Your Majesty. There is no god but You.) And when he finished his prayer, he would say: 'Subhanaka Rabbika Rabbil 'izzati 'amma yasifun, wa salamun 'alal mursalin, wal hamdulillahi Rabbil 'alamin.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Exalted in Might, from what they describe. And peace be upon the messengers. And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.) When he bowed, he would say: 'Subhana Rabbiyal 'azim.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.) And when he prostrated, he would say: 'Subhana Rabbiyal a'la.' (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.) And he would say between the two prostrations: 'Allahumma ghfir li, warhamni, wahdini, wajburni, wa 'afini, warzuqni.' (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, strengthen me, pardon me, and grant me sustenance.) He would prolong his standing and prostration. And when he said: 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him), he would say: 'Rabbana wa lakal hamd' (Our Lord, and to You is the praise). And he would say in his prostration: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and deeds that are accepted.)
