O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabi-l-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnati-d-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnati-l-mamati.
When to Read
This powerful dua is particularly potent during the blessed hours of Tahajjud, the night prayer. As you stand before Allah in the stillness of the night, seeking His closeness and protection, reciting this supplication is a way to seek refuge from the most severe trials, including those that could lead to oppression or great hardship for the Muslim community. It's a moment of vulnerability and sincerity, perfect for asking Allah to shield us.
How to Read
Recite this dua with a sincere heart and a clear intention of seeking Allah's protection. It is best recited after the Tashahhud in the final part of the prayer, just before the Taslim (salutations). However, the Prophet ﷺ also taught us that we can make dua at any time, especially during Tahajjud, so even if it's as a personal supplication after completing your prayer, it holds immense weight. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates seeking refuge in Allah from four major evils: the torment of Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of the Dajjal, and the trials of life and death. By seeking refuge from these, we are implicitly asking for Allah's protection for ourselves and, by extension, for the entire Ummah from any form of severe affliction, including the oppression that stems from disbelief, ignorance, or injustice. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself recited this dua frequently, highlighting its importance and comprehensive nature.

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah in these words: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and from debt.' 'Abbas said: 'O Allah’s Messenger, how frequent you seek refuge from debt!' He said: 'A man, when he is in debt, tells lies and makes false promises, and then [when he is asked about it] he keeps on talking falsehood and making false promises until his debt is paid.'
