Dua for Protection from Calamities in the Last Third of the Night

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1145

Our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven each night when the last third of the night remains, saying: 'Is there anyone to call upon Me, so I may answer him? Is there anyone to ask Me, so I may give him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness, so I may forgive him?'

Yatanazzalu Rabbuna Tabaraka wa Ta'ala kulla laylatin ila sama'id-dunya hina yabqa thuluthul-layli al-akhir, yaqulu: Hal min daa'in fa'astajib lahu? Hal min sa'ilin fa'u'tiyahu? Hal min mustaghfirin fa'aghfira lahu?

When to Read

This principle applies to the last third of the night, particularly during times when one feels vulnerable to calamities or simply wishes to supplicate during this blessed hour. The hadith highlights that this is a prime time for Allah's acceptance of dua.

How to Read

While this narration describes Allah's descent and His calls for supplication, it doesn't present a specific dua *for* protection. Instead, it emphasizes the *opportunity* to make any dua during this time. To seek protection from calamities, you would make sincere supplications in your own words, or recite established duas for protection, during the last third of the night. Ensure your heart is present, your intentions are pure, and you are in a state of readiness to ask Allah for His help and safeguarding. Facing the Qiblah is recommended when making dua, though not strictly obligatory.

Virtues & Benefits

The last third of the night is considered the most excellent time for worship and supplication. Allah Himself actively invites us to call upon Him and seek whatever we need. Making dua during this time is highly likely to be answered. By consistently turning to Allah during this blessed period, we are actively seeking His shield against all forms of calamities, both seen and unseen. It fosters a deep reliance on Him and strengthens our connection with our Creator.

Source & Authentication

The narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven each night when the last third of the night remains, saying: 'Is there anyone to call upon Me, so I may answer him? Is there anyone to ask Me, so I may give him? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness, so I may forgive him?' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758)
