Dua for Physical Health and Comprehensive Well-being During Night Worship

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1542

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from that which is terrifying. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence lest I be swallowed up from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya, wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'adhamatika an ughtala min tahti.

Virtues & Benefits

The word 'Afiyah (العَافِيَة) is a comprehensive term in Islam, encompassing protection from all hardship, illness, and misfortune. By asking for 'Afiyah, we are asking Allah for the best of both worlds: protection from trials in this life and safety from punishment in the next. This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), is a powerful means to safeguard oneself physically, spiritually, and emotionally. It's a request for overall security and health, making it incredibly potent during the quiet contemplation of night worship.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): One day Al-Abbas said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something I may ask Allah for.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from that which is terrifying. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence lest I be swallowed up from beneath me.' Abdullah ibn Abbas said: 'And he (the Prophet ﷺ) said: 'And he (Al-Abbas) used to ask Allah for this dua every day.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1542, Sahih)
