Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1305

O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge of the unseen and by Your power to create. Keep me alive as long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know that death is better for me. I ask You to grant me fear of You in secret and in public. I ask You for the word of truth in satisfaction and anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth. I ask You for lasting bliss. I ask You for a joy that never ceases. I ask You for contentment after Your decree. I ask You for a pleasant life after death. I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face and the eagerness to meet You, without any harmful distress or misleading trials. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka bi'ilmikal-ghaybi wa qudratika 'alal-makhluqin, ahyini ma 'alimtal-hayata khayran li, wa tawaffani idha 'alimtal-wafaata khayran li, wa as'aluka khashyataka fil-ghaybi wash-shahadati, wa as'aluka kalimatil-haqqi fir-rida wal-ghadabi, wa as'aluka al-qasda fil-faqr wal-ghina, wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu, wa as'aluka qurrata 'aynin la tanqati', wa as'aluka ar-rida ba'dal-qada'i, wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhatan-nadari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika, fi ghayri dharra'in mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyina bizinatil-imani, waj'alna hudatan muhtadin.

When to Read

This profound dua is particularly potent when recited during Tahajjud, the voluntary night prayer. When you find yourself facing a specific obstacle, a difficult decision, or a period of hardship, dedicating a portion of your Tahajjud salah to seeking Allah's help through this supplication can bring immense clarity and strength. The stillness of the night, combined with the sincerity of your prayer and this comprehensive dua, creates a powerful atmosphere for divine intervention.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full sincerity and presence of heart during your Tahajjud prayer. It is best recited in the final portion of the night, just before Fajr, when Allah descends to the lowest heaven. Raise your hands as you do in prayer and pour out your heart to Allah, focusing on the specific obstacle you are facing while also encompassing the broader requests for faith, contentment, and guidance. Reflect deeply on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his beloved daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), is incredibly comprehensive. It covers seeking Allah's knowledge and power, asking for a righteous life and death, desiring His fear and truthfulness, seeking balance in worldly matters, and requesting everlasting bliss and contentment. By asking for 'lasting bliss' and 'delight of looking at Your Face', we are focusing on the ultimate goals of a believer. The request for 'contentment after Your decree' is crucial for accepting whatever Allah has planned for us, including the resolution of our obstacles. It also encompasses asking for guidance and the ability to be a source of guidance for others, making it a dua for both personal and communal benefit.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): 'What prevents you from hearing what I instruct you to say? Say: O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge of the unseen and by Your power to create. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided.' He said: 'O Fatimah, indeed it is excellent supplication.'
