اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
"Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
Allahumma rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar
When to Read
This is a comprehensive dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is particularly powerful when recited during the blessed hours of the night, especially after performing Tahajjud (night worship). Recite it during the last portion of the night, in the prostration part of your prayer, or as you finish your worship, seeking Allah's acceptance for yourself and your entire family's deeds and supplications.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of asking Allah for the best in this life and the next, and protection from the Hellfire. It's beneficial to raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet ﷺ often did, especially during the latter part of the night. Ensure you are in a state of ritual purity if possible. Reflect on the comprehensiveness of this dua; it encompasses all aspects of well-being, both worldly and spiritual.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a concise yet incredibly powerful supplication that covers the entirety of a believer's needs. It was a favorite of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). By asking for 'hasanah' (goodness) in this world, we are asking for well-being, provision, knowledge, and all that is beneficial. Asking for 'hasanah' in the Hereafter encompasses Paradise and all its blessings. Protecting us from the Fire is the ultimate plea for salvation. When recited during night worship, our connection with Allah is strongest, and our duas are more likely to be accepted. Seeking Allah's acceptance for our family through such potent supplications during this sacred time elevates our devotion and strengthens familial bonds under Allah's mercy.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Allah does not answer the dua of a person, or the dua of the people, concerning a disbeliever, or concerning a hypocrite, or concerning a child if he is in the womb, or concerning a young boy if he is not pubescent.' Narrated Al-Aswad: 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, 'The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah with his supplication most of the time: O Allah! Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.' When he invoked Allah, he used to say this invocation.'
