Dua for Enhanced Patience and Resilience During Life's Challenges

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3847

O Allah, I ask You for patience upon what You have decreed, a good life, a righteous death, and an outcome that does not bring disgrace or expose my faults.

Allahumma inni as'aluka sabran 'ala ma qaddart, wa 'ayshan tayyiban, wa mītatan sawiyyatan, wa mirfaqan ghayra mukhzin wa la fadihin.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is particularly potent when recited during the profound stillness of Tahajjud prayer, a time when hearts are softened and supplications are elevated. It's also excellent to say at any point during the day or night when you feel the weight of life's trials pressing down, or as a regular invocation to cultivate inner strength.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands in supplication as you would during prayer. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the request for Allah's divine support in navigating life's decree with grace. It can be recited once or multiple times, especially during moments of deep reflection.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates a comprehensive request for well-being in this life and the next. By asking for patience upon Allah's decree, we acknowledge His wisdom and plan, seeking inner peace even when faced with hardship. The request for a 'good life' encompasses contentment and ease, while a 'righteous death' signifies a peaceful departure with our faith intact. Finally, seeking an outcome free from shame or exposure of faults is a plea for dignity and mercy both in this world and before Allah on the Day of Judgment. Cultivating patience (sabr) is a highly rewarded quality in Islam; Allah says in the Quran, "Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (Al-Baqarah 2:153).

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever is afflicted by any trial, and he mentions it to people, it will not be lightened for him. Whoever is afflicted by any trial, and he mentions it to Allah, then Allah may well hasten his relief or his death. And whoever says: Allahumma inni as'aluka sabran 'ala ma qaddart, wa 'ayshan tayyiban, wa mītatan sawiyyatan, wa mirfaqan ghayra mukhzin wa la fadihin. Then Allah will grant him what he asked for.'
