Dua for Allah's Help to Overcome Anxiety and Depression Through Night Worship

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow. I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness. I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess. I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and from the domination of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly effective when recited during the quiet solitude of the night, especially during Tahajjud (night prayer). The stillness of the night allows for deeper reflection and a more direct connection with Allah. It's a perfect supplication to make when feeling overwhelmed by worry, sadness, or the pressures of life, seeking Allah's protection and relief from these burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart. Raise your hands as you would during supplication in prayer. Picture yourself presenting your worries and seeking refuge with the One who has power over all things. Repeat it multiple times if you feel a deep need, allowing the words to sink into your heart. This dua is often recited after the obligatory prayers, but its potency during Tahajjud is immense, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the virtue of night worship.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua addresses several key afflictions that contribute to anxiety and depression: * **Freedom from Worry:** Seeking refuge from 'al-ham' (anxiety) and 'al-hazan' (sorrow) directly combats feelings of dread and sadness. * **Empowerment against Inaction:** Asking to be protected from 'al-'ajz' (helplessness) and 'al-kasal' (laziness) helps in regaining the motivation and strength to take positive steps. * **Courage and Generosity:** Seeking refuge from 'al-jubn' (cowardice) and 'al-buhl' (stinginess) fosters inner strength and a more giving spirit, which can lift one's mood. * **Relief from Debt and Oppression:** 'Ghalabatid-dayn' (being overcome by debt) and 'qahr ar-rijal' (domination by men) are significant sources of stress and helplessness, and seeking refuge here brings hope for ease and justice. Reciting this during Tahajjud amplifies its benefit, as the night is a time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven, inviting us to call upon Him.
