Dua for a Pure Heart and Intentions in Night Worship

Night Worship & Tahajjud
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1550

O Allah, I ask You for a sound heart, a truthful intention, and beneficial knowledge, and I seek refuge in You from deafness, dumbness, madness, leprosy, and all evil diseases.

Allahumma inni as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa niyyatan sadiqah, wa 'ilman naafi'an, wa a'udhu bika min samamin wa bakamin wa junoonin wa judhaamin wa sayyi'il asqaam.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when recited during the sacred hours of the night, especially before or during your Tahajjud prayer. It's a perfect supplication to begin your night worship, seeking Allah's grace to purify your heart and intentions before you stand before Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt earnestness. Imagine your heart opening up to Allah as you ask for purity and truthfulness. Visualize the diseases you seek refuge from as spiritual ailments that can hinder your worship, and feel the reliance on Allah for protection. It can be recited once, or repeated, especially after your initial supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking a 'sound heart' (qalb saleem) is central to acceptance in Allah's sight. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that Allah does not look at your bodies or your forms, but at your hearts and your deeds (Sahih Muslim 2564). A truthful intention (niyyah sadiqah) ensures that our acts of worship, like Tahajjud, are solely for Allah's pleasure, maximizing their reward. Beneficial knowledge guides us to worship Him correctly, and seeking refuge from diseases, both physical and spiritual, is a sign of a servant's complete dependence on their Creator.

The hadith from Sunan Abi Dawud states: Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge in his supplication, saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have created.' (Abu Dawud said: He means from the sun, and from everything else.) Then he mentioned a similar chain of narration that it was narrated: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my tongue, from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.' Another narration by Abdullah ibn Amr: The Prophet ﷺ taught me a supplication that I should say in supplication to Allah for protection on the Day of Resurrection: 'O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You.' This specific wording appears in a narration collected by Abu Dawud where the Prophet ﷺ taught it to a companion, emphasizing the importance of asking for a pure heart and sincere intentions alongside seeking knowledge and protection from ailments.
