O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation. Keep me alive so long as You know that life is better for me, and take me away [in death] when You know that death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You for Your fear in private and in public. I ask You for the word of truth in times of contentment and anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth. I ask You for everlasting bliss. I ask You for the joy of looking at Your countenance and the longing to meet You. (I ask for this) without any hardship that causes harm or any trial that leads astray. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided.
Allahumma inni as'aluka bi 'ilmika al-ghayb, wa qudratika 'ala al-khalq, ahyini ma 'alimta al-hayata khayran li, wa tawaffani idha 'alimta al-wafata khayran li. Allahumma inni as'aluka khashyataka fil-ghaybi wash-shahadati, wa as'aluka kalimat al-haqqi fir-rida wal-ghadabi, wa as'aluka al-qasida fil-faqr wal-ghina, wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu, wa as'aluka qurrata 'aynin la tanqati', wa as'aluka ar-rida ba'dal-qada'i, wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'dal-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhat an-nazari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ik, fi ghayri dharra'a mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bi zinat al-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadeen.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is particularly potent when recited during Tahajjud, the voluntary night prayer. The quiet solitude of the night, when the world sleeps, offers a unique opportunity to connect with Allah in a deeply personal way. When you face urgent personal matters, immense challenges, or feel the weight of a significant decision, turning to this dua during Tahajjud can bring clarity, peace, and divine guidance.
How to Read
Begin your Tahajjud prayer as usual. After offering your obligatory prayers and any Sunnah prayers, enter into a state of humble supplication. Raise your hands, facing the Qiblah, and recite this dua with sincere intention and absolute trust in Allah. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase as you say it. Pour out your heart, articulating your specific urgent needs while accepting Allah's perfect plan. Continue to make personal pleas and ask for what you need, knowing that the night is a time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven, calling out to those who seek Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua encompasses a wide range of requests, seeking Allah's protection, guidance, and contentment in all aspects of life. It embodies the essence of seeking Allah's pleasure, a profound state that brings inner peace and satisfaction, regardless of external circumstances. By asking for moderation in wealth and poverty, and bliss that never ends, we are requesting a balanced and fulfilling existence in this life and the next. The longing to look upon Allah's face and meet Him highlights the ultimate goal of a believer: proximity to the Creator. Reciting this during Tahajjud amplifies its impact, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night, saying: ‘Is there anyone to call upon Me, so that I may answer him? Is there anyone to ask of Me, so that I may give him? Is there anyone to seek forgiveness from Me, so that I may forgive him?’' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758).
