In the name of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have created it with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have created it with.
Bismillahi, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubila 'alayhi.
When to Read
This dua is perfect for reciting when you first bring a new pet into your home. It's a moment of new beginnings, and invoking Allah's protection and blessings sets a positive tone for your relationship with your new companion.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention. Place your hand gently on the pet (if appropriate and safe for the animal) as you recite, focusing on seeking Allah's blessings for both of you. Remember that our pets are a trust from Allah, and this dua acknowledges that.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua embodies the Islamic principle of seeking good and protection from evil in all aspects of life, including our interactions with animals. By reciting it, you are seeking Allah's protection for the new pet from any harm or negative traits, and asking for its inherent goodness to be a source of joy and blessing. It also reminds us that even animals are created by Allah, and have their own natures which we should respect and manage with care.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this dua when acquiring a new mount (like a camel or horse). A similar practice can be extended to any new living being that comes under our care. The narration often cited is: 'When one of you is about to acquire a mount, he should take hold of its forelock, recite the name of Allah, and say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have created it with, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have created it with.' And when he is to travel, he should recite the takbir (Allah Akbar) and say: 'O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover the distance, and take us back to our family by Your goodness.' (Narrated by Muslim, and the phrasing for acquiring the mount is found in Abu Dawud with a Sahih chain).
