Virtues & Benefits
This dua seeks two core blessings: that the new friend be a source of good for you, and that you both develop a profound and genuine fear of Allah. This fear (taqwa) is the key to any lasting, beneficial relationship, as it encourages honesty, loyalty, and mutual advice towards what is right. A friendship built on taqwa is a treasure in this life and a source of elevation in the next.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: 'My love is incumbent upon those who love each other for My sake, those who sit together for My sake, and those who visit each other for My sake.'" Then he said: "Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: 'My love is incumbent upon those who give and take for My sake, and My love is incumbent upon those who visit each other for My sake." Abu Hurairah said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The Lord descends with three things: with the Book, with the Scale, and with the Decree. He loves what He decrees and hates what He hates, and He loves that His command be obeyed and hates that His command be disobeyed. He loves the most righteous of His creation, and He loves the most discerning of His creation for His sake. He loves the righteous of His creation, and He loves the discerning of His creation for His sake. He loves the beloved ones of His creation for His sake. He loves those who visit each other for His sake, and He loves those who give and take for His sake. He loves those who sit together for His sake. And there is nothing more beloved to Allah than for two men to love each other for His sake, and for two women to love each other for His sake, and for a man to give his brother what he needs for his sake." It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, said: 'My love is incumbent upon those who love each other for My sake, those who sit together for My sake, and those who visit each other for My sake.'" Abu Hurairah said: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you loves his brother, he should tell him, for that will strengthen the love between them.'" It was narrated from Mu'adh ibn Anas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "My Lord, the Mighty and Sublime, commanded me, and He commanded me with a command that I do not think you can bear, and He commanded me with something that I do not think you can bear. He commanded me to fear Allah in secret and in public, and to speak justly in anger and in contentment, and to be moderate in poverty and in wealth, and to give forgiveness to him who wrongs me, and to give to him who deprives me, and to keep ties with him who cuts me off. And He commanded me that my voice not be raised in the markets, and that my character not be evil, and that the truth be my source of wealth, and that justice be my eternal possession. And He commanded me that I not wish for what is with others, and that I be generous with what is before me, and that I be kind to my relatives. And He commanded me that I not turn away from what I commanded, and that I not be afraid of anyone in the path of Allah. And He commanded me that I remind Allah in secret and in public, and that I say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the remembrance of You, and the fear of You in secret and in public, and the word of truth in anger and in contentment, and moderation in poverty and in wealth, and the pleasure of Your decree, and a good life after death, and the pleasure of looking at Your face, and the longing to meet You, and I seek refuge in You from the harm of what is decreed, and from the misguidance of the evil ones.'" And he said: "O Allah, make him good for me and make me fear You as You should be feared." (Sunan Ibn Majah 3111)
