Dua for the Beginning of a New School Term

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 224

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and deeds accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

This dua is perfect for the start of a new school term, whether it's the first day, the night before, or even during the first week. Recite it after Fajr prayer or at any suitable moment when you are focused and ready to begin your studies with intention. It's a beautiful way to infuse your academic journey with blessings from the outset.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Ensure you are in a state of purity (Wudu) if possible, facing the Qiblah, and raising your hands as you make the supplication. Begin by praising Allah and sending Salawat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before and after the dua, as taught in the Sunnah. Believe in Allah's ability to grant your requests.

Virtues & Benefits

This concise yet comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encapsulates seeking the best in three crucial areas for students and learners. 'Beneficial knowledge' ('ilman nafi'an) is knowledge that not only increases understanding but also leads to righteous action and draws one closer to Allah. 'Goodly provision' (rizqan tayyiban) encompasses more than just material wealth; it includes blessings in health, family, and opportunities that are pure and lawful. 'Deeds accepted' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) signifies the ultimate goal – that our efforts in seeking knowledge, our worship, and our interactions are pleasing to Allah and count as acts of Ibadah. This prayer sets a positive and productive tone for the entire term, aligning your efforts with divine pleasure.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he said the Salam after finishing his prayer, would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and deeds accepted). - (Graded Sahih by some scholars, found in Sunan An-Nasa'i 925, Sunan Ibn Majah 224, and Sahih Muslim 743 where it states it was a supplication the Prophet ﷺ would say upon finishing his prayer, not specifically tied to Fajr, but general supplication after prayer). While this hadith is specifically mentioned as being recited by the Prophet ﷺ after finishing his prayer, the request for knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds is universally beneficial. Applying it to the beginning of a new term is a practical and blessed way to seek divine assistance for academic endeavors.
