‘Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘I used to say: O Allah, I ask You for right guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency. And the narrator Abu Bakr said: I used to say: O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.’ This hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, who said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: ‘I used to say: O Allah, I ask You for right guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.’ So someone said to him: ‘You have asked for many things!’ He said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: No servant is asked for anything except that it will be given to him, so ask for much.’
