Dua for Inner Peace and Contentment When Starting Something New

New Beginnings
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4924

O Allah, I ask You for its [this new thing's] goodness, and the goodness of what it contains, and I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil of what it contains.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha.

When to Read

This dua is beautiful to recite just before embarking on any new endeavor, whether it's starting a new job, moving to a new home, beginning a new project, or even taking a significant step in your personal life. It's a moment to pause and imbue your intentions and the undertaking itself with blessings and protection from Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Imagine you are speaking directly to Allah, asking for His guidance and protection. Focus on the meaning of the words, acknowledging that all goodness comes from Him and that He is the ultimate protector against all harm. It's best recited before you physically begin the new venture.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound way to seek Allah's favor and protection at the outset of anything new. By asking for the 'goodness' of the new beginning and its contents, you are aligning your desires with what Allah wills for you. Simultaneously, seeking refuge from its 'evil' acknowledges our own limitations and dependence on Allah's safeguard against unforeseen difficulties or negative outcomes. It cultivates a mindset of reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and fosters a sense of inner peace and contentment by trusting in His plan.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that when one of you marries a woman, or buys a servant, or buys a camel, he should take her by the forelock and ask Allah for its good and the good of what she contains, and seek refuge in Allah from its evil and the evil of what she contains. He should do likewise when he buys a riding-beast or a house, and if he has a portion of property which he fears will be damaged, he should take its forelock and ask Allah for its good and the good of what it contains, and seek refuge in Allah from its evil and the evil of what it contains. (This is a general principle applied to various situations). Note: While the wording in the hadith often mentions specific items like a 'servant' or 'camel,' the principle is universally applicable to any new venture or acquisition. The key is seeking Allah's blessing and protection for the 'good' it contains and His refuge from any 'evil.'
