Dua for Embracing a New Chapter with Divine Guidance

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1080

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this matter and the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it brings. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this matter and the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it brings. And I seek refuge in You from hardship and poverty.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhal-amri wa khayra ma feehi wa khayra ma u'tiya bih, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhal-amri wa sharri ma feehi wa sharri ma u'tiya bih, wa a'udhu bika minal-bu'si wal-faaqah.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for those moments when you're stepping into something new – a new job, a new home, a new phase of life after a significant event like marriage, graduation, or even a difficult transition. It’s meant to be recited when you are about to embark on a new endeavor, seeking Allah's blessing and protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. It is best recited before you actively begin the new chapter. Focus on the meaning, acknowledging Allah's complete knowledge and power over all affairs. Imagine your situation laid out before Him and asking for the best outcome, while seeking His protection from any potential harm. Raising your hands slightly is a beautiful supplication posture, but sincerity in the heart is paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive seeking of good and refuge from evil. It helps to orient your heart towards Allah, recognizing that true success and protection come only from Him. By asking for the 'goodness of this matter' and its results, you are submitting to Allah’s perfect wisdom, trusting that His plan is ultimately beneficial. Seeking refuge from hardship and poverty instills reliance on Allah as your ultimate provider and protector.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught us the Istikharah prayer, and we prayed it. He said: 'If one of you is considering an important matter, he should pray two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayers, and then say: O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge, and power from Your power, and I ask of Your great bounty. For You are able and I am not, You know and I know not, and You have knowledge of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter – and he mentions his need – is good for me in this life and the Hereafter, then ordain it for me and make it easy for me, then bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is evil for me and my religion and my worldly life and my Hereafter, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166). While this famous hadith is for Istikharah (seeking guidance), the dua provided above, 'Allahumma inni as'aluka khayra hadhal-amri...', is a general supplication for seeking the good in any specific matter or new undertaking, and seeking refuge from its evils. It's often recited after Istikharah or independently for smaller concerns, but its comprehensive nature makes it fitting for major life transitions.
