Dua for Embarking on a New Project or Initiative

New Beginnings
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4920

O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what it contains, and the goodness of what it was created for. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what it contains, and the evil of what it was created for.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra ma fiha, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha wa sharri ma fiha.

When to Read

Recite this dua before starting any new project, venture, business, or even a significant task. It’s a way to seek Allah's blessings and protection from the outset, whether you are beginning a new job, launching a website, starting a construction project, or embarking on any new endeavor that requires effort and intention.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, ideally before you physically begin the work. Raise your hands as you make the dua, demonstrating your supplication to Allah. Focus on the meaning, understanding that you are entrusting your efforts to the Almighty and seeking His guidance and protection from unforeseen harms or negative outcomes.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking the best of both worlds – the positive aspects and outcomes of the new initiative ('khayraha wa khayra ma fiha') and the well-being of those involved ('khayra ahliha'). Simultaneously, it is a powerful plea for protection ('a'udhu bika') from any potential negative consequences, difficulties, or harms ('sharriha', 'sharri ahliha', 'sharri ma fiha'). By reciting this, we acknowledge our limitations and place our trust in Allah's plan and His ability to grant success and avert disaster.

Source & Authentication

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘There are three times when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would not stand over anyone, and he would not ask about anything that had happened: when he prayed, when he was in the process of a funeral, and when he was commencing a new project.’ Then he mentioned a similar narration from Al-Aswad ibn Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, bless it for them.' And he would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what it contains, and the goodness of what it was created for. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what it contains, and the evil of what it was created for.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4920, Sunan Ibn Majah 2403 – graded Hasan)
