Dua for Buying a New Vehicle

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2089

In the name of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for. O Allah, bless me with it.

Bismillah, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubila 'alayhi, Allahumma barik li fihi.

When to Read

This dua should be recited immediately after purchasing a new vehicle, whether it's a car, motorcycle, boat, or any other mode of transport. It's best to say it before you drive it for the first time. You can say it quietly to yourself as you sit in the driver's seat or as you are completing the purchase.

How to Read

Begin by stating 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). Then, proceed with the rest of the dua, seeking the good and protection from evil, and finally asking for Allah's blessing. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly in supplication, as is customary when making dua, though it's not a strict requirement in this specific context. The intention is key – a sincere heart seeking Allah's help and barakah (blessing).

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua when acquiring a new vehicle brings several blessings: 1. **Seeking Goodness and Protection:** You are actively asking Allah for the good that the vehicle offers (ease of travel, connection) and protection from its potential harms (accidents, mechanical failures, misuse). 2. **Invoking Barakah:** The phrase 'Allahumma barik li fihi' specifically asks for Allah's blessing, which multiplies the good and safeguards against evil, making the journey safer and more beneficial. 3. **Acknowledging Allah's Sovereignty:** It reminds us that everything, including our possessions and means of transport, comes from Allah, and we must rely on Him for its proper use and protection.

Source & Authentication

The narration describes that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ bought something, he would often take its right hand (meaning, its front part or the reins) and say: 'Bismillah, Allahumma inni as'aluka khayrahu wa khayra ma jubila 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma jubila 'alayhi, Allahumma barik li fihi.' (In the name of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for. O Allah, bless me with it.) This hadith, recorded in Sahih Muslim, is generally understood to apply to buying animals, but its principle extends to any new acquisition where safety and benefit are primary concerns, including modern vehicles.
