New Beginnings
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3371

I seek protection for him/her with the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.

U'ee'dhu'hu bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited for a newborn baby, ideally soon after birth. It can be recited regularly, for instance, after Fajr and Maghrib prayers, or whenever you feel the need to seek extra protection for your child. You can gently blow on the child after reciting.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full conviction in Allah's power. Place your hand on the child's forehead or chest while reciting. It is also a Sunnah to recite Surah Al-Fatihah, the last three Surahs of the Quran (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas), and blow on the child. This supplication is often attributed to the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he made dua for his descendants, and also to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for his grandchildren Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua invokes Allah's ultimate protection for the newborn against unseen evils like demonic influence ('shaytan'), harmful creatures ('hammah'), and the evil eye (''ayn'). It's a powerful supplication that places the child's well-being under Allah's divine care, seeking a future free from harm and filled with blessings. By reciting it, parents actively engage in safeguarding their child through spiritual means, aligning with the prophetic tradition of seeking refuge in Allah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn saying: 'أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ' (U'ee'dhukumā bikalimatillahit-tāmmah, min kulli shaytanin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli 'ayn lāmmah). 'I seek protection for you both with Allah's perfect words, from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.' Then he would say: 'It was the practice of Ibrahim (Abraham) to seek Allah's protection for his offspring with these words.' Sahih al-Bukhari 3371
