Dua for a Newborn: Seeking Allah's Protection and Guidance for Your Child

New Beginnings
Sahih HadithBukhari 3371

I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous creature and from every evil eye.

U'īdhuka bikalimātillāhit-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lāmmah.

When to Read

When you welcome a new life into your home, the first instinct is to shield them from every harm. This beautiful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, offers a profound way to do just that. You can recite it the moment your child is born, whispering it gently over them. The Prophet ﷺ would specifically recite this for his beloved grandsons, Al-Hasan and Al-Husain, showing us its power and significance right from the earliest days. Make it a regular practice – when you put them to sleep, when they are unwell, or simply as a daily protection, much like a spiritual embrace around them.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua with great care, not just as words, but as an act of profound spiritual seeking. When you recite it, let your heart be fully present, recognizing that you are invoking Allah's perfect words for your child's protection. The original narration uses the plural form (أُعِيذُكُمَا) as the Prophet ﷺ was supplicating for both his grandsons. For a single male child, you would say "U'īdhuka" (أُعِيذُكَ), and for a single female child, "U'īdhuki" (أُعِيذُكِ). The Sunnah indicates that the Prophet ﷺ would sometimes recite such du'as and then gently blow over his grandsons. You can do the same – recite it with sincerity, perhaps placing your hand on your child's head or chest, and then blow a light, almost imperceptible puff of air. The key is sincere reliance on Allah, understanding that true protection comes only from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua for your child is an act of deep parental love, rooted firmly in the Sunnah. The very essence of this supplication is to seek Allah’s complete and perfect protection (bikalimātillāhit-tāmmah) from all forms of evil. This includes tangible dangers, the whispers of Shaytan that can influence a child's character and thoughts, and the subtle yet potent harm of the 'evil eye' – glances filled with envy or admiration that can sometimes bring unintended ill effects. By consistently reciting this, you are not just saying words; you are building a shield of Allah's mercy around your child, entrusting their well-being to the One who is the Best of Protectors. It also brings immense peace of mind to you, the parent, knowing you are following a blessed practice established by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
