Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 3371

I seek protection for you with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.

U'idhu-ka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaitanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'ainin lammah.

When to Read

This is the very dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught when his grandson Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was born. It's a beautiful practice to recite this upon seeing the newborn, or regularly, to invoke Allah's protection. Imagine holding your little one, looking into their innocent eyes, and whispering these words. It's a moment of deep connection, entrusting your child's well-being to the One who created them.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full concentration on Allah's power. You can gently touch the forehead of the newborn while reciting, or simply hold them close. It's also permissible to blow gently on the child after reciting, similar to how the Prophet ﷺ did.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful way to shield your newborn from any spiritual harm, be it the whispers of Shaytan, the influence of harmful creatures, or the sting of the evil eye. It’s an acknowledgment that true safety and security come only from Allah. By seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words, you are entrusting your child to His all-encompassing care. It’s a beautiful Sunnah, showing our reliance on the Creator for even the most precious of blessings.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge with Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: 'I seek protection for you with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn were among the Prophet's grandsons, and the Prophet ﷺ loved them dearly.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371)
