When to Read

This beautiful dua is traditionally recited by the elders or guests at a wedding ceremony, immediately after the marriage contract (nikah) is solemnized. It can also be recited by the bride and groom themselves, or by family members, at any point during the wedding festivities to invoke Allah's blessings on the new union. It's a profound way to start the marriage on a spiritual foundation, asking for Allah's barakah (blessings) to permeate every aspect of their life together.

How to Read

This dua is typically recited with sincerity and warmth, directing the supplication towards the newly married couple. It's meant to be said with the intention of seeking Allah's favor and protection for them. While it can be recited individually, it's often said by multiple people to amplify the collective prayer. Focus on the meaning of the words: asking for abundance, divine favor, and harmonious togetherness in a way that pleases Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua for a newly married couple is a Sunnah practice that carries immense spiritual weight. It acknowledges that true success and happiness in marriage come not just from human effort but from Allah's decree and blessings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to signify that a marriage built on the foundation of Allah's 'barakah' is more likely to be stable, joyful, and filled with mutual love and understanding. It sets a positive spiritual tone for the couple's journey, reminding them to always turn to Allah in all their affairs, especially within their most significant worldly relationship.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ married a woman, he would not ask for anything (Mahr) but when others married off their daughters to him, he would give them Mahr. When Abdur Rahman bin Awf married, the Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'May Allah bless you and grant you barakah in your marriage. Let him offer a feast, even if it be with a sheep.' (Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)) Sunan Abu Dawud (2130) and Sunan At-Tirmidhi (1091) record the dua: 'May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.' This narration, along with others like it, demonstrates the Prophet's ﷺ emphasis on seeking Allah's blessing for new beginnings, especially in marriage.
