أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
I seek forgiveness from Allah, than whom there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. And I turn to Him in repentance.
Astaghfirullahal-ladhee la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilaih
When to Read
This powerful dua is best recited in the morning, after Fajr prayer, and also in the evening. It's a beautiful way to begin your day by consciously acknowledging your need for Allah's mercy and cleansing yourself of any unintentional slip-ups from the previous night or day. Incorporating it into your morning routine ensures you start with a clean slate, seeking Allah's forgiveness for any minor sins that may have occurred, even if unknowingly.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart. Understand the meaning of seeking forgiveness ('istighfar') and turning back to Allah ('tawbah'). It's recommended to say it three times, as this is a common sunnah for many supplications. Focus on the attributes of Allah mentioned: Al-Hayy (The Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (The Self-Sustaining, Everlasting). Recognizing His perfection and constant presence strengthens the impact of your dua.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication is incredibly comprehensive. Firstly, it directly asks for Allah's forgiveness, which is the cornerstone of our relationship with Him. Secondly, it acknowledges the absolute oneness of Allah by stating 'la ilaha illa hu' (there is no deity worthy of worship except Him). Thirdly, it praises Allah using His beautiful names, Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum, reminding us of His power and independence, and our utter dependence on Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that whoever says this dua would be forgiven even if he fled from the battlefield during the day, indicating its immense weight and merit. (Note: Fleeing the battlefield is a major sin, so this hadith highlights the power of sincere repentance and seeking forgiveness through this specific dua for sins, implying it is particularly effective for seeking forgiveness for minor wrongdoings and sins that may have occurred unknowingly or through human weakness.)
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever says: 'Astaghfirullahal-ladhee la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum wa atubu ilaih' (I seek forgiveness from Allah, than whom there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. And I turn to Him in repentance.) seven times, he will be forgiven even if his sins were as vast as the foam of the sea.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1517, Sunan An-Nasa'i 743 - graded Hasan by many scholars). In another narration, it is mentioned that this was said once after a battle, implying its potency for forgiveness.
