Dua for Courage Before Difficult Morning Conversations

Daily Morning Routine
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5903

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua in the morning, ideally right after Fajr prayer or before you begin your day's activities. It's particularly beneficial when you anticipate a challenging conversation or a situation requiring strength and clarity of mind, like discussing a sensitive issue with a spouse, colleague, or family member that might arise early in the day.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. Face the Qiblah if possible. Raise your hands in supplication as taught in the Sunnah for du'a. Believe that Allah is capable of granting you the courage and strength you seek. Reflect on the meanings of the words as you say them, internalizing the plea for protection from fear, weakness, and being overcome by others.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, provides comprehensive protection against internal struggles (anxiety, sadness, weakness) and external pressures (being overwhelmed by others). By seeking refuge in Allah from 'galebatid-dayn' (the burden of debt) and 'qahrir-rijal' (the overpowering of men), we are essentially asking for Allah's help to face situations where we might feel pressured, intimidated, or controlled, including difficult conversations where one might feel their voice is not heard or they are being unfairly challenged. It fosters inner strength and reliance on Allah, enabling us to approach challenges with greater confidence and resilience.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to say these words in the morning and evening: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa 'dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-sturn 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi. Wa a'udhu bi 'adamatika an ughtala min tahti.' (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs and my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my defects and secure me from the things I fear. O Allah, guard me from before me and from behind me and from my right and from my left and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your magnificence from being smitten from beneath me.)' and 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.) Reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
