O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to myself even for the blink of an eye.
Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum birahmatika astaghith, aslih li sha'ni kullahu wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited in the morning after Fajr prayer. It’s a recognition that our ability to manage even the smallest of our affairs ultimately comes from Him.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt recognition of your dependence on Allah. Understand the meaning of 'Ya Hayyu' (O Ever-Living, the One who never dies) and 'Ya Qayyum' (O Self-Subsisting Sustainer, the One who sustains all things but needs no sustenance). The phrase 'birahmatika astaghith' signifies seeking help through Allah's vast mercy. The plea 'aslih li sha'ni kullahu' is a comprehensive request for all your affairs to be set right, and 'wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn' is a profound admission of your own limitations and a request not to be left to your own devices, not even for a moment.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a deep reliance on Allah's mercy and His ability to manage all affairs. By reciting it, we affirm our belief that Allah is the source of all life and sustenance, and that our success in this life and the next depends entirely on His help. It's a protection against relying solely on our own strength or capabilities, which are inherently weak and prone to error. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she asked him for a servant, indicating its significance in seeking Allah's provision and ease in all aspects of life.
Source & Authentication
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) while she was in her prayer mat. He asked: 'O Fatimah! What prevented you from joining the people (in the prayer)?' She said: 'My hair is disheveled.' He said: 'Do not be worried, for indeed the women of the Ansar are not deficient in their reverence towards Allah and their service to them, except for their husbands, so you should perform the prayer.' Then he said: 'Shall I not teach you a supplication that you (or the women) may invoke Allah with?' She said: 'Certainly.' He said: 'Invoke Allah saying: O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to myself even for the blink of an eye.' (Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum birahmatika astaghith, aslih li sha'ni kullahu wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn.)
