Seeking Refuge from Laziness and Debility in Old Age

Morning Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6367

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and senility, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and from the trial of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and from the evil of the trial of wealth, and the evil of the trial of poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what night and day bring.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa 'adhabil-qabri, wa fitnatin-nari, wa 'adhabin-nari, wa sharri fitnatil-ghina, wa sharri fitnatil-faqr, Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma jalabal-laylu wan-nahar.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is part of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ morning remembrance (adhkar). It's ideally recited after Fajr prayer, as you begin your day, seeking Allah's protection against debilitating physical and mental states. The morning is a crucial time to set the tone for the day, asking Allah for strength and protection from His creation's evils, including those that might affect our capacity to worship Him and fulfill our duties.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, directing your plea to Allah alone. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic words clearly and with understanding of their meaning. Imagine yourself actively seeking refuge in Allah's all-encompassing protection from the very things you are mentioning. This is not just reciting words; it's an active engagement with Allah's power and mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, you are proactively shielding yourself from several significant negative aspects: 1. **Helplessness ('ajz) and Laziness (kasal):** These can cripple our ability to perform acts of worship, earn a livelihood, and manage our responsibilities. Seeking refuge here is asking for physical and mental energy to serve Allah and His creation. 2. **Cowardice (jubn) and Senility (haram):** Cowardice prevents us from standing up for truth, and the debility of old age (haram) can make life challenging. This dua asks for strength of character and resilience against the frailty of aging. 3. **Trials and Punishment of the Grave and Fire:** This is a profound request for protection in the intermediate and ultimate stages of the Hereafter, acknowledging the gravity of these realities. 4. **Trials of Wealth and Poverty:** Both extremes can lead to transgression. Excessive wealth can lead to arrogance and disbelief, while extreme poverty can lead to despair and disbelief. This dua seeks a balanced state. 5. **Evil of Day and Night:** This encompasses all the potential harms, temptations, and difficulties that can arise throughout the course of a day and night.
