Narrated by Aban ibn Uthman: Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "He who says three times every morning: 'Bismillahi alladhi la yadhurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-samaa'i wa huwas-Samee'ul-Aleem' (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing), will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the evening. And he who says it in the evening will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the morning." Aban ibn Uthman said: "Then Aban ibn Uthman was afflicted by paralysis, and the man who had narrated the hadith to him (i.e., Aban ibn Uthman) started looking at him. Then Aban ibn Uthman said to him: 'What are you looking at? By Allah, I did not tell you a hadith as I have narrated it to you. But it was that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) did not narrate it to them, but he said it to him (Aban ibn Uthman) once, and he (Aban ibn Uthman) was afflicted by the same thing as the paralysis which is in him." (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088, Sunan Ibn Majah 3864).
