O Allah, grant my soul its taqwa (piety, consciousness of You), and purify it, for You are the Best of those who purify. You are its Guardian and its Protector.
Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha, wa zakkiha anta khairu man zakkaha, anta waliyyuha wa mawlaha
When to Read
This dua is particularly relevant when you catch yourself in the mirror, perhaps noticing a physical trait that reminds you of a negative habit or a flaw you wish to change. Seeing your reflection can be a powerful moment of self-awareness. Recite this when you feel a disconnect between how you want to be and how you perceive yourself, especially if the reflection highlights areas needing spiritual or behavioral improvement.
How to Read
Recite this with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. It's best recited while looking at your reflection, connecting the outward appearance to the inner state. Raise your hands if you are alone and feel the presence of Allah guiding your supplication. Focus on the meaning of each word and the request for Allah's direct intervention in purifying your soul.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly asks Allah for two crucial things: the gift of taqwa, which is the foundation of righteous action, and purification of the soul. When we see ourselves, especially in the mirror, it can be a catalyst for introspection. Recognizing our shortcomings or the outward manifestation of inner flaws can be a prompt to seek Allah's help in rectifying them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua, indicating its immense value in spiritual development and self-correction. It helps us acknowledge that ultimate purification and guardianship come only from Allah.
