Dua for Divine Help Against Addiction While Looking in the Mirror

Looking in Mirror
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 5746

O Allah, grant my soul its righteousness, and purify it, for You are the Best Purifier; You are its Guardian and Master. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul, and from the evil of Satan and his associates (or his shirk/entrapment), and from committing evil against myself or directing it towards a Muslim.

Allahumma ati nafsi taqwaha, wa zakkiha anta khayru man zakkaha, anta waliyyuha wa mawlaha. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri sh-shaytani wa shirkih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an, aw ajurrahu ila muslimin.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly poignant when recited while looking in the mirror, as it prompts introspection. Facing oneself in the mirror can be a moment of confronting one's own shortcomings and struggles, including addiction. Recite it in the morning after Fajr, or any time you feel the pull of addiction or a need for spiritual strength and self-purification. It serves as a daily affirmation and a plea for divine assistance in maintaining purity of heart and action.

How to Read

Stand before a mirror, making eye contact with yourself. Begin by acknowledging Allah's power and mastery over your soul. Recite the dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, focusing on each word and its meaning. Visualize Allah purifying your soul and protecting you from all forms of evil, both internal and external. The act of looking in the mirror amplifies the personal nature of this supplication, reminding you that the battle against addiction is one that must be fought within oneself, with Allah's help.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates a comprehensive plea for spiritual well-being. It asks Allah to instill piety (taqwa) in the soul, recognizing that true righteousness comes from Him alone. It seeks purification, acknowledging that only Allah can truly cleanse the heart and mind. Crucially, it asks for refuge from the 'evil of one's soul' – the temptations and weaknesses that can lead to destructive behaviors like addiction – and from Satan's influence. By seeking protection from harming oneself or another Muslim, it emphasizes the holistic nature of Islamic ethics, where personal purity is linked to community well-being.
