Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking the best in this life and the next. Seeking guidance (huda) illuminates the path, while piety (tuqa) ensures we stay on that path, mindful of Allah. Chastity ('afaf) protects us from temptations and desires that could lead us astray, fostering inner purity. Self-sufficiency (ghina) means contentment with what Allah has provided, freeing us from the desperate need for external validation or fulfillment, including that of a partner, by finding it first in our connection with Allah.

Source & Authentication

A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to invoke Allah with these words: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal huda wat tuqa wal 'afafa wal ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency). And he used to invoke Allah with these words: 'Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa anta.' (O Allah, grant me health in my body, O Allah, grant me health in my hearing, O Allah, grant me health in my sight, there is no god but You). He would repeat this three times. And he would invoke: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal kufri wad-darari, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, la ilaha illa anta.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, there is no god but You). He would repeat this three times.
