O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijal.
When to Read
Recite this dua when you feel overwhelmed by a sense of loneliness or disconnection due to being in a new environment or surrounded by different cultural norms. It's particularly helpful when these differences make you feel misunderstood or apart from others, leading to anxiety and sadness. You can also recite it during times of personal hardship that exacerbate feelings of isolation.
How to Read
Make this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Raise your hands as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us, and beseech Allah directly. Visualize the burdens and anxieties you feel lifting as you utter these words. It is best to recite this with a clear mind, perhaps after Fajr or before sleeping, but it can be said at any time you feel the need for Allah's support.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, addresses deep-seated feelings of distress. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge that true strength and relief come only from Him. It helps combat the mental and emotional burdens of isolation, the fatigue that comes from struggling to adapt, and the fear that can arise when feeling out of place. It reminds us that even in the face of societal pressures or perceived 'oppression' (qahr ar-rijal can also encompass societal pressures), Allah is our ultimate protector and sustainer.
