Dua for Solace, Connection, and Relief from Loneliness: The Supplication of Prophet Yunus (AS)

Loneliness & Isolation
QuranAl-Anbiya 21:87

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin

When to Read

When you find yourself feeling truly alone, perhaps struggling to connect in a new place where the language and customs are unfamiliar, this is your anchor. It’s for those moments when homesickness weighs heavy, or you long for understanding companionship. Prophet Yunus ﷺ recited this from the absolute depths of isolation in the whale's belly. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed, distressed, or simply yearning for a profound connection and solace from Allah.

How to Read

The beauty of this dua lies in its profound truth. When you recite it, let your heart truly affirm: 'There is no deity except You.' This is the declaration of Tawhid, the core of our faith. Follow it with 'subhanaka' – acknowledging Allah's absolute perfection and freedom from any flaw, even in your distress. Then, humbly confess 'inni kuntu minaz-zalimin' – acknowledging your own shortcomings. This isn't about guilt, but recognizing that any difficulty we face is often a result of our own actions or a test from Allah, and we turn to Him in repentance and absolute submission. Recite it with presence of mind, understanding the weight of each phrase, and with full certainty that Allah hears and responds.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful key to relief. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'The supplication of Dhun-Nun (Prophet Yunus) when he supplicated, while in the belly of the whale was: 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' No Muslim supplicates with it for anything but Allah will respond to him.' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3505). This isn't just a promise of relief from physical peril; it's a promise of solace for the heart. When you feel disconnected from people, this dua deepens your connection with Allah, who is the ultimate Companion and Source of all peace. It provides internal strength, replaces loneliness with closeness to the Divine, and opens doors to unexpected help and ease in your circumstances.
