Dua Upon Leaving Masjid an-Nabawi

Leaving Masjid
Hasan HadithAl-Mu'jam al-Kabir 12921

O Allah, do not make my departure from the grave of Your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a final farewell, but rather a return. Return, O Lord, swiftly, and grant us a blessed visit.

Allahumma la taj'al akhir 'ahdi bi-qabri Nabiyyika sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam wada'an, wa lakin 'awdan, 'ud ya Rabbi sari'an, wa-zur-na ziyaratan mabrooratan.

When to Read

This heartfelt dua is recited when one is leaving Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet's Mosque) in Madinah, often after performing ziyarah (visit) to the grave of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them). It signifies a deep yearning to return to this blessed city and the sacred sites within it.

How to Read

As you depart from the Prophet's Mosque, stand facing the Qiblah, or in a respectful manner, and recite this dua. It's a moment to reflect on the immense blessings of being in Madinah and to express your sincere desire to come back soon. Focus on the meaning and pour your heart into the supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua upon leaving Masjid an-Nabawi expresses a profound love for the Prophet ﷺ and his Mosque, and a sincere desire to revisit its sanctity. It's a way of acknowledging that the visit is a blessing from Allah and seeking His grace to allow for future returns. This deepens the spiritual connection established during the stay in Madinah.

Source & Authentication

Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir documented this supplication attributed to Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he would depart from Madinah, seeking to return. While not directly tied to leaving the Prophet's grave specifically in all narrations, its sentiment is most fitting for that moment of departure from such a sacred place. The wording reflects a deep spiritual longing and respect.
