Dua for Leaving the Masjid to Seek Knowledge

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1373

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik

When to Read

This dua is recited when leaving the Masjid with the intention of seeking knowledge. It's a beautiful way to transition from one form of worship (Salah in the Masjid) to another significant act of devotion (seeking beneficial knowledge). Think of it as asking Allah to bless your journey and efforts in acquiring that knowledge, recognizing that all provisions come from Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely as you step out of the Masjid, after fulfilling your obligatory or voluntary prayers. It's a personal supplication, so say it with humility and focus on its meaning – acknowledging Allah as the ultimate source of all provision and asking Him to grant you from His immense favor.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates the essence of recognizing Allah's sovereignty and bounty. By asking for His favor, we acknowledge that knowledge, understanding, and the ability to pursue it are all blessings from Him. This act transforms the pursuit of knowledge into an act of worship, seeking Allah's pleasure and assistance in acquiring that which is beneficial for ourselves and the Ummah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught us this dua as a way to seek Allah's provision and grace when embarking on such important endeavors.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'When any one of you performs Salah in the mosque and then leaves, let him say: O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.'" (Sahih Muslim 1373). While this hadith specifically mentions leaving the mosque after prayer, its principle extends beautifully to any departure from the mosque for a purposeful, righteous activity like seeking knowledge, especially when that knowledge is sought for the sake of Allah.
