Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Protection on a Journey

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited upon leaving any mosque, whether it's your regular place of worship or one you visit temporarily. It's particularly poignant when you're embarking on a journey, whether it's a short trip across town or a longer expedition. The Masjid is a sanctuary of peace and remembrance, and as we step out, this dua serves as a bridge, carrying that divine presence and protection with us into the world.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and full awareness of its meaning. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His blessings. Then, declare your reliance on Him with 'tawakkaltu 'alallahi' (I place my trust in Allah). Finally, affirm that all strength and power come only from Him with 'wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (and there is no might nor power except with Allah). It's often recited when taking the first step away from the mosque's entrance, ideally stepping out with your left foot, as is generally recommended for leaving places.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised a profound reward for reciting this dua upon leaving the Masjid. It's reported that when one says this, they are told: 'You have been guided, you have been sufficed, and you have been protected.' This encompasses guidance for your path, sufficiency for your needs, and protection from all harm. It's a comprehensive supplication that seeks Allah's care in every aspect of your journey, both physical and spiritual, as you transition from the House of Allah to the wider world.

Narrated Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you performs the prayer and then says: Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah – O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from errring or being led astray, or slipping or causing others to slip, or being wronged or doing wrong, or being ignorant or being caused to act ignorantly. He said: Then Shaytan says: I have been separated from you for the whole day.' (Reported by Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i. Al-Tirmidhi said it is Hasan Gharib. It is also mentioned in Sahih Muslim with slight variations in wording and without the supplication for refuge.)
