Leaving Masjid
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 772

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَافْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ فَضْلِكَ

O Allah, forgive my my sins and open for me the gates of Your bounty.

Allahummaghfirli dhunubi waftah li abwaba fadlik

When to Read

As you complete your prayers and are about to depart from the masjid, preparing to step back into the rhythm of daily life, this is the moment to turn to Allah with this powerful dua. It’s recited just as you are physically exiting, often stepping out with your right foot first, carrying the tranquility of your worship into the world.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught us the importance of sending peace and blessings upon him when entering and leaving the mosque. So, before this specific supplication, begin by saying: **بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ** (*Bismillah was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah* – 'In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah'). After sending salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ, then humbly recite the main dua: **اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي وَافْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ فَضْلِكَ** (*Allahummaghfirli dhunubi waftah li abwaba fadlik*). Recite it with presence of heart, contemplating that you are asking the All-Merciful for forgiveness and for Him to bestow upon you from His vast bounty.

Virtues & Benefits

Leaving the masjid is a transition. You've just connected with Allah in the most direct way, and now you're returning to a world full of tasks, tests, and sometimes, trials. This beautiful dua offers profound benefits that speak directly to our needs, including navigating difficulties: * **Seeking Forgiveness is Seeking Ease:** The first part, 'Allahummaghfirli dhunubi,' is a direct plea for Allah to forgive your sins. We know that sins can be a cause of distress, hardship, and distance from Allah's blessings. By seeking forgiveness as you leave His house, you are actively asking for spiritual cleansing, which often paves the way for ease and removal of difficulties in your life. It's a fundamental step towards inner peace and external relief. * **Unlocking Allah's Boundless Bounty (Fadl):** The core of this supplication is asking Allah to 'open for you the gates of His bounty.' The Arabic word **فضل (fadl)** is incredibly comprehensive. It’s not just about material gain; it encompasses every good thing from Allah: guidance, sustenance, health, wisdom, protection, and indeed, relief from all forms of hardship and difficulty. When you ask for His bounty, you are asking for His comprehensive favor to surround you as you step back into the world, covering your needs and alleviating your burdens. * **Preparing for the World with Divine Support:** As you depart, this dua serves as a spiritual shield and a request for divine assistance. You acknowledge your reliance on Allah for everything that awaits you outside the masjid, seeking His continuous support and intervention to ease any challenges you might face. It’s a powerful affirmation that you carry the blessings of your prayer into your daily life, trusting that Allah will 'intercede' in your affairs by granting you His bounty and removing obstacles.

Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 'When the Prophet ﷺ entered the mosque, he would send salutations upon Muhammad, and say: `Allahummaghfirli dhunubi waftah li abwaba rahmatik (O Allah, forgive my sins and open the gates of Your mercy for me).' And when he left, he would send salutations upon Muhammad, and say: `Allahummaghfirli dhunubi waftah li abwaba fadlik (O Allah, forgive my sins and open the gates of Your bounty for me).' — Sunan Ibn Majah 772
