Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Securing Our Hearts to the House of Allah

Leaving Masjid
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is traditionally recited after Fajr prayer while still in the masjid, before leaving. It's a beautiful way to transition from the spiritual immersion of prayer to the activities of the day, asking Allah to carry the barakah of the masjid with us.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, focusing on the meaning of each request. It's recommended to remain seated for a moment after the prayer, facing the Qiblah, and then recite this dua before getting up to leave. Some scholars mention that it can be recited before getting up from the prayer mat.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to be recited after Fajr prayer. The scholars explain that asking for 'beneficial knowledge' means knowledge that leads to acting upon it, 'goodly provision' means lawful and blessed sustenance, and 'acceptable deeds' means those done with sincerity and in accordance with the Sunnah, which Allah accepts. Reciting this prayer helps us carry the spirit of devotion and connection to Allah from the masjid into our daily lives, fostering a sense of attachment to the mosques and the worship practiced within them.

Source & Authentication

The hadith often cited in relation to this is: 'The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, when he finished his prayer (Fajr), would not speak to anyone until he had said these words: Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds).
