O Allah, make in my heart a light, and in my sight a light, and in my hearing a light, and to my right a light, and to my left a light, and above me a light, and beneath me a light, and before me a light, and behind me a light, and grant me a light, and make my light immense. My Lord, expand my chest and make my task easy for me. I seek refuge in You from oppressive chests and evil suspicions. O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day, its opening, its help, its light, its blessings, and its guidance. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it.
Allahumma-j'al fee qalbi nooran, wa fee basari nooran, wa fee sam'ee nooran, wa 'an yameenee nooran, wa 'an yasaree nooran, wa fawqee nooran, wa tahtee nooran, wa amamee nooran, wa khalfi nooran, waj'al lee nooran, wa 'adhdhim lee nooran, Rabbi-shrah lee sadree wa yassir lee amree, A'udhu bika min sudoori-d-deeqi wa adhaine-s-soo', Allahumma innee as'aluka khayra hadha al-yawmi fat-hahu wa nasrahu wa noorahu wa barakatahu wa hudaahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadha al-yawmi wa sharri ma ba'dahu.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited upon leaving the Masjid. While it's a general supplication for light and ease, its inclusion in this context is particularly poignant. When we leave the house of Allah, we pray that the spiritual light and guidance we experienced within the Masjid continues to illuminate our path, and that we are enabled to return soon.
How to Read
This dua encapsulates a deep request for divine light in all aspects of our lives and seeks protection from hardship and evil. When reciting it upon leaving the Masjid, focus on the intention that the 'light' it asks for will keep your heart connected to Allah and the Masjid, making you eager to return. It's a plea for continued spiritual clarity and ease in navigating the world outside, with the ultimate hope of returning to the sacred space.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication is profoundly beneficial as it requests Allah's light to permeate every facet of our existence – our hearts, vision, hearing, and in all directions around us. This symbolizes spiritual insight, awareness, and protection. By asking for the 'good of this day', it sets a positive spiritual tone for our activities. Crucially, by asking for the ability to return to the Masjid, it expresses a deep yearning for continuous connection with Allah and His worship, recognizing the Masjid as a sanctuary of peace and guidance.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication in the same way that he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an: 'Allahumma innee as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.) And he used to say: 'The prayer of the servant, when he says... [the dua in the 'arabicText' field]... is a retention for him (i.e., it is counted as part of his prayer) until the next prayer.'
