Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited when stepping out of your home. When you make this intention to leave your home, not just for your own needs but to engage with the world – whether it's for work, to visit family, to help someone, or even just to interact with neighbors – you imbue that simple act with profound meaning. By reciting this, you're asking Allah to guide your steps and your interactions, setting a tone for building positive relationships and fostering understanding.
How to Read
It's best recited as you are physically exiting your home. Utter the words with sincerity and conviction. This isn't just a string of words; it's a declaration of reliance on Allah (SWT) and an acknowledgment that all strength and ability comes from Him. Imagine each word as a gentle step, grounding you in divine protection and purpose as you embark on your journey.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to seek Allah's protection and guidance when leaving home. It affirms our dependence on Allah, acknowledging that nothing good can happen and no evil can be averted without His help. When your intention is to build bridges – to connect, to reconcile, to foster goodwill – this dua becomes an invocation for your interactions to be blessed, for your words to be wise, and for your presence to be a source of positive influence. It transforms a routine departure into a spiritual endeavor aimed at pleasing Allah and serving His creation.
Source & Authentication
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When a man goes out of his house and says: Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah), it will be said to him: You have been guided, you have been taken care of, and you have been protected.' So the devil keeps away from him. And another devil says to him: How can you deal with a man who has been guided, taken care of, and protected?
