Dua for Leaving Home to Seek Repentance and Spiritual Renewal

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4998

In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I should stray, or be led astray, or slip, or be caused to slip, or oppress, or be oppressed, or act foolishly, or be dealt with foolishly.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an adilla aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya.

When to Read

This dua is specifically for the moment you step out of your home with the intention of embarking on a journey, especially one for seeking repentance and spiritual renewal. It’s meant to be recited as you begin your departure, setting your intention and seeking Allah’s protection and guidance for the path ahead.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full reliance on Allah (tawakkul). As you say 'Bismillah,' you are invoking Allah's name, acknowledging His presence and blessing in your actions. When you say 'tawakkaltu 'alallah,' you are consciously placing your trust in Him to manage your affairs. The phrase 'wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' affirms that no transformation or strength can occur without Allah's decree. The subsequent supplication is a comprehensive plea for protection against various forms of error, misguidance, and harm, both from oneself and from others.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is profoundly comprehensive. It shields you from personal misguidance and from being misled by others. It protects you from stumbling spiritually or having others cause you to stumble. It safeguards you from falling into injustice yourself or being subjected to injustice. Finally, it seeks protection from ignorance and from those who might act ignorantly towards you. Reciting this when leaving home, particularly for a journey of repentance, ensures you are under Allah's care, seeking His help to navigate the challenges of seeking forgiveness and spiritual growth.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'When a person says when leaving his house: Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. It will be said to him: You have been sufficed, protected, and guided. And the devil will move away from him.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 4998, Graded Sahih by Al-Albani]
