Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6137

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recited when one steps out of their home, embarking on a journey, especially one undertaken with a noble intention like seeking knowledge or finding a mentor. It signifies your reliance on Allah as you leave the safety and familiarity of your dwelling for a purpose.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely as you take your first step out of your home. It's meant to be a declaration of faith and reliance on Allah before you begin your journey. Ensure your intention is pure, seeking Allah's help and guidance in your quest for a mentor.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a shield against all forms of harm when leaving home. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) when he set out, he said, 'It will be said to him: "You are guided, you are taken care of, and you are protected." So that the devils will go away from him. Another devil will say to him: "What can you do with a man who has been guided, is taken care of and is protected?"' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 - Hasan). It transforms your departure into an act of worship, ensuring divine protection and guidance.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person goes out of his house, he says: Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah). Then it is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, protected, and guided.' So the devils turn away from him. Another devil says to him: 'What shall we do with a man who has been sufficed, protected and guided?' (Transmitted by Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi, who said it is Hasan Sahih).
