Dua for Leaving Home to Recover Lost Property

Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4700

In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from erring or being led astray, from stumbling or causing others to stumble, from wronging others or being wronged, and from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an adilla aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya.

The phrases reflect a comprehensive seeking of refuge, covering spiritual, physical, and social harms. Take a moment to understand each part of the dua before you utter it.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection. It seeks refuge from misguidance ('adilla aw udalla') and from making mistakes that lead others astray. It also asks for protection from personal errors that might cause others to slip ('azilla aw uzalla') and from committing injustice or facing it ('azlima aw uzlama'). Finally, it guards against ignorance, both in acting foolishly oneself or being subjected to foolishness from others ('ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya'). By reciting this, you are essentially placing yourself under Allah's care for your entire outing, asking for guidance and protection in all aspects.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When a person says: 'In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.' It is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, protected, and guided.' And the Shaitan (devil) moves away from him. Another Shaitan says to him: 'How can you deal with a man who has been sufficed, protected, and guided?' - Sunan Abi Dawud 4700 (Hasan).
